Who will succeed Jil Sander at her eponymous label after yesterday's announcement that she had stepped down for a third time? That's the question on fashion industry lips this morning and so far one name, Gabriele Colangelo, has come to the fore.
The young Milan-based designer - who cut his teeth at Versace and Cavalli - has a similarly pared-back aesthetic, emphasis on luxurious fabrication and precision cut as the Sander label, but could bring a modern point of view in the same way that Raf Simons was credited with doing when he joined in 2005. The designer was unable to be reached this morning.
As for Sander herself, no statement has been forthcoming from the designer following her sudden resignation, but sources credited by WWD today suggest that the decision relates to her longtime partner, Dickie Mommsen.
