How Beyoncé Angered Nasa

Beyonce has been criticised by Nasa after she used an audio clip from the 1986 Challenger shuttle accident in a new song, entitled XO. The track opens with an excerpt taken from television footage heard when the shuttle exploded and fell from space, killing its seven crew members.

"The Challenger accident is an important part of our history; a tragic reminder that  space exploration is risky and should never be trivialised," a Nasa statement said. "Nasa works every day to honour the legacy of our fallen astronauts as we carry out our mission to reach for new heights and explore the universe."

June Scobee Rodgers, the widow of the Challenger's late commander, Dick Scobee, also voiced her grievances: "We were disappointed to learn that an audio clip from the day we lost our heroic Challenger crew was used in the song XO. The moment included in this song is an emotionally difficult one for the Challenger families, colleagues and friends."

Beyoncé has defended her decision to feature the clip, saying that it was included "in tribute to the unselfish work of the Challenger crew with hope that they will never be forgotten".
